Article concerning the shady past of Mormonism.
Excerpt:
Until 1978, the so-called Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was an officially racist organization. Mitt Romney was an adult in 1978. We need to know how he justified this to himself, and we need to hear his self-criticism, if he should chance to have one.
This article is worth a read. I really do not feel comfortable demanding candidates to answer questions about their religion. But this is the sticky political situation that conservatives find themselves in. Their pandering to religious voters and denunciation of secular government has a cost. So I suppose Romney should answer the tough questions about his religion.

i saw that and i LOVE that you wrote something on it. he's got some 'splainin' to do
I find it to be in poor taste for that article to haphazardly accuse a religion of once being a racist organization without offering up any sources or supporting facts about the matter. I'm sure there were many "Christian" Churches in the 1970's that could have also been considered "racist organizations".
I believe every person has the right to believe it whatever religion they wish. That is one of the founding pillars of America and free-will.
But Mitt Romney definitely needs to stop acting like a child by complaining that people are asking him about his religion. He is applying for the most important job in our country, the President. If he believes that it is Un-American for citizens to know about the beliefs of their countries leader then he is applying for the wrong job in the wrong country.
I agree completely that the republican party has made religion such an enormous part of their political DNA that no republican should coward when they are confronted with questions about religion.
Granted, the role of religion tends to be more of a PR move for republicans, but they have proved it year after year, that religious beliefs will play a major role in the service of any republican President.
Matthew, so you want references? well, besides the fact that you can enter the words "racist" and "mormon" in google and find literally hundreds of good references right from the Mormon's own Book of Mormon, here's just a few in my letter to Chris Matthews:
Dear Chris,
So are you saying that if the KKK wanted to run for president that no one should care? But you are white Chris; if you're African American or even of the dark skinned persuasion, Romney’s Mormonism matters a GREAT DEAL, whether or not he's "quiet about it."
It’s the very Book of Mormon that still contains overt racist scriptures. And Romney professes to belief in this Book. This book is what their religion is based on, it’s their FOUNDATION. It’s not just the fact that the Mormons practiced racism against people of color up until the 1970’s, but the doctrine of racism is specifically mentioned in their bible, the Book of Mormon.
Any president who wants to lead this country that reads and trusts a book that specifically teaches racism and specifically states that dark skin is "the mark of Cain," is just simply anti-American. No matter how "quiet" he or she is about it.
Here is what their book says, this is verifiable and the scriptures of the Book of Mormon are noted below, their book still states this to this day, even if the Mormons are quiet about it:
1. God curses certain individuals with dark skin.
2. The races are determined by how worthy individuals were prior to this mortal life. Blacks were not as faithful in their first estate.
3. The Book of Mormon teaches that God cursed certain Israelite American Indians with dark skin, and this was meant to keep them from interbreeding with their white brethren.
4. This scripture also teaches that God blessed some who repented with white skin.
5. Nothing concerning the revelation in 1978 to give "all worthy males members" the priesthood invalidates these beliefs
Here’s their own scriptures for reference: (Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation 1:61-7; McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 527-8; Alma 3:6-9; 2 Ne. 5:21-4; and 3 Ne. 2:14-6).
It would be very wise for you to do a little research before you declare to the world that holding this against Romney is unAmerican, for what I read you to be saying is that it's okay if a religion is racist - which conflicts with the consitutional amendment, just to say it's okay to have freedom of religion. Remember, this is the very thing white people used against blacks to justify slavery.
Please consider these facts when you tell everyone it’s “un-American” to be concerned about a presidential candidate’s beliefs.
Thank you,
Mavis Johnson “Mavis J”
p.s. here's some quotes written by the very founders of the mormon faith, very CHILLING:
MORMON RACIST DOCTRINE: http://www.realmormonhistory.com/god&skin.htm
You know, it's so funny the the most un-Christian people I encounter are usually the so-called Christians who decide they're all of a sudden an authority on my Religion.
Somehow, the fact that I believe something different gives them license to insult, ridicule, and intimidate me with fear that my heretical views will earn me endless hell and torment. To a Muslim, Hindu or a Buddhist what makes you any more right than a Mormon?
I didn't think so. Shut the hell up.
I don't remember Jesus ever acting that way when somebody didn't agree with him.
