A Megachurch Gets Introspective

The Story.

One problem with Mega-Churches seems to be their destructive effect upon the Individual. People become so wrapped up in "plugging" into this or that program or class that they become part of the herd and fall into lazy group-think when confronted with theological or moral problems. The preacher of one Megachurch has come to see this.

Excerpt:

More jarringly to Hybels, the report showed that the strong emphasis on involving people in activities and programs was, after a point, problematic. Indeed, to the extent that it diminished individual responsibility for Bible study and other forms of personal spiritual development, it was even counterproductive. As he wrote in the foreword to his study, Hybels now saw that "the church and its myriad of programs have taken on too much of the responsibility for people's spiritual growth."

I continue to believe that many Nu-Churches can be very damaging to a mature relationship with God. Staying at home and reflecting for an hour could be more beneficial or less damaging than hearing a authorotative preacher twist the Bible to fit into his worldview and biases. And when I say this I am not insulting preachers as much as acknowledging that Christianity and the interpretation of the Bible is not the same for any two people. We should celebrate this diversity instead of lining up in single file.
